NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana was born in Eagle, Pennsylvania on June 11, 1956. In 1977 Montana led the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame to their twelfth of thirteen national football championships by pasting Texas 38-10 in the Cotton Bowl played on New Year’s Day 1978.
The San Francisco 49ers no doubt bet for his future greatness when they picked Montana in the third round of the 1979 NFL Entry Draft. The 49ers brass did not have long to wait for the first step on Joe’s path to greatness to be taken. On January 10th, 1982, Montana threw a six yard touchdown pass to tight end Dwight Clark with 51 seconds left in the NFC Championship Game to beat the Dallas Cowboys 28-27. This come-from-behind win was one of 31 such wins in his outstanding career.
His astonishing late-game ability to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat seemed to happen with such regularity that it became known as “Montana Magic.” Arguably, the most memorable moment of “Montana Magic” occurred in Super Bowl XXIII when he concluded a 92-yard game winning drive by throwing a 10-yard touchdown pass to John Taylor with 34 seconds left.
In his outstanding career with the 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs, Joe Montana amassed the stats and honors that cemented his entrance into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2000. He won the NFL passing title in 1987 and 1989 and led the NFC in passing in 1981, 1984, 1985, 1987, and 1989. He passed for 300 yards in a game 39 times; in seven of those 39 games he passed for more than 400 yards.
Montana’s other honors and achievements include:
A post-season record six 300-yard passing performances.
Holding the career playoff record for attempts, completions, touchdowns and passing yards.
Four Super Bowl titles and three Super Bowl MVPs.
Eleven playoff appearances and nine division titles.

40,551 career passing yards.
5,391 career attempts.
3,409 career completions.
